Baptism: The Sacrament of salvation and the entrance into God's family

The Sacrament of Baptism is the foundational sacrament, serving as the door through which we enter God's Kingdom and are adopted into his family, the Church. It is primarily concerned with the salvation of souls, marking the beginning of a new life in Christ. Historically, baptisms commenced at the entrance of churches, symbolising this entry into the divine life. At Sacred Heart Parish, we warmly welcome those seeking Baptism, whether for themselves or their children, into our community. We understand that by presenting yourself or your child for Baptism, you are expressing a profound desire to grow in the Catholic faith. This journey of faith is nurtured by the active participation of parents and the support of Godparents in the life of the Church. As an outpost of the worldwide faith community, Sacred Heart Parish sees itself as an extended family, offering a place where you and your family can feel welcomed, supported, and loved. Baptism signifies belonging not only for the individual but for the entire family, inviting them to be washed in Christian baptism, participate in Sunday Mass, and strive to live a moral life of faith in the world. For those preparing for Baptism, Sacred Heart Parish typically celebrates the sacrament on the last Sunday of each month, either during the 9:30 am Mass or at 11:30 am after Mass. A preparation meeting with the parish priest is required in the month leading up to the baptism, and both parents and godparents are invited to attend this session at the Parish Office. If celebrating the baptism outside of Mass is more appropriate for your family, please speak to the parish office or the parish priest.

Choosing God Parents

These are the guidelines for choosing God Parents according to the Roman Catholic Tradition:

  • The Godparent needs be a Roman Catholic as he/she represents the Catholic Community
  • The Godparent needs to have received the Sacrament of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation
  • Only one Godparent is necessary and no more than two is the norm.
  • The Godparent cannot be the parent of the child
  • The Godparent must be at least 16 years of age unless a dispensation is given by the Local Bishop or the Parish Priest.
  • A baptised person who belongs to a non-catholic ecclesial community may be admitted only in company with a Catholic Godparent, and simply as a witness to the baptism.
  • The Godparent must be willing to take on the responsibility and sacred duty of regularly praying for the child and making sure the child grows in their relationship with God, and learns about the Catholic faith and Tradition. This promise is made before God and must not be entered into lightly.

Please consider carefully the person you choose as a Godparent
