Funerals at Sacred Heart

The Christian funeral is a liturgical celebration of the Church that commends the deceased to God's merciful love and pleads for the forgiveness of their sins. While it is not a sacrament for the deceased, as they have passed beyond the sacramental economy, it is a vital expression of the Church's efficacious communion with those who have died. Through the funeral rites, especially the celebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice, the Christian community affirms its union with the Church in heaven in the communion of saints, recognizing that the departed are still one with believers on earth and benefit from their prayers and intercession.

At Sacred Heart Parish, we minister to the sorrowing and offer consolation through the comforting word of God and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. The funeral rites proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and witness to Christian hope in the resurrection, reminding all participants of God's mercy and judgment. In the Eucharist, the Church offers the sacrifice of Christ's death and resurrection to the Father, asking for the purification of the deceased from their sins and their admission to the fullness of the Kingdom. This celebration helps the faithful, particularly the family, to live in communion with the one who "has fallen asleep in the Lord," by sharing in the Body of Christ and praying for and with the deceased. The rite of final commendation and farewell acknowledges the reality of separation while proclaiming the belief that all the faithful will be raised up and reunited in the new heavens and new earth, where death will be no more.
